Around 1984, songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Elliot Straite, aka Dr. The attention was on lead singers Tresvant and Gill to come up with solo LPs, so Bell Biv DeVoe felt no glaring attention and could record their album with relatively no scrutiny. Silas wanted Jam and Lewis to produce, but the trio wanted to work with more rap-oriented producers. Jam and Lewis called MCA A&R exec Louil Silas and told him about Bell Biv DeVoe. The trio decided to call themselves Bell Biv DeVoe. The producers suggested that three of the members start a group called Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe.
